The Liberty ship wreck is the most visited diving site of Bali at a perfect depth for scuba diving ranging from 2.5 meters down to 29 meters. A big amount of marine live cover the wreck, about 400 different species of reef fish live on the Liberty.
In TULAMBEN Bay
The USAT Liberty a 120 meter long shipwreck, is the remains of a US World War II freighter, torpedoed on January 1942 by a Japanese submarine while crossing the Lombok Strait carrying material (rubber and railway parts) from Australia to the Philippines. The damage was immense, she was taking too much water and her crew ran the vessel up onto the beach of Tulamben 70km away from the nearest safe harbour.
For 21 years she stayed there. In 1963 the Liberty was pushed to her present location by the fatal eruption of the volcano Gunung Agung. During this process the hull broke into two pieces. Now the wreck is laying only 30 meter from the Tulamben beach on a sandy slope 90° on her side parallel to the shore. The deck side faces the ocean.
The wreck is considered an easy dive where the stern is around the 6 meters deep while the deck is at 25 meters. This makes of this dive spot on of the most popular dive sites in Bali. Don`t miss it!

In KUBU
The Boga was sunk deliberately in September, 2012 in Kubu close to Tulamben. Unlike the Liberty Wreck which broke into many pieces the Boga is intact. The ship lies in a depth of 14 to 34 meters and is almost 40 meters long. It will probably become a habitat for many marine species, similar to the Liberty in Tulamben.
A wooden steering wheel on the upper deck.
A car wreck in one of the lower decks. Groupers, batfishes, Anthias and banner fishes.

Why you should do a night dive in here... ?
There are spectacular colourful beams of marigold cup corals, and hundreds of shrimp greet you at every corner. Common lionfish stalk their prey as well as the rare and nocturnal oscellate dwarf lionfish. Cocooned and sleeping Bumphead parrotfish are quite common, and you may even see the rather strange sight of free-swimming crinoids.
